Standing in the center of all the chaos was Philip, giving directions and managing others. He turned and gracefully sauntered over.
âYes, much better,â he said approvingly. âLetâs get you something to eat and we can sit down and talk.â
âSplendid idea,â agreed Hainsworth.
They followed him through the room and into the kitchen area. Tom and Sarahâs mouths watered at the prospect of what wonderful delights awaited them.

By the time Detective Gowerstone stormed into his Oxford headquarters, it was past 11:00 p.m. A few policemen worked at their desks, while others looked through files or talked on the phone.
âWhere have you been, sir?â asked an officer anxiously. âWeâve tried contacting you several times.â
âI was detained by the Prime Minister. He just doesnât understand how important this is,â Gowerstone replied resentfully. He then studied a large computer screen showing England and a small dot flashing at Windsor Castle.
Although the detective expected to capture Tom and Sarah in Oxford, he wasnât taking any chances. He had learned that they were both very smart and extremely lucky. He also suspected that they were receiving some form of help or outside assistance, which only complicated matters. Statistically, the longer it took to capture them, the harder it would become. The first twenty-four hours were crucial, but that time had passed. So, after the balloon crashed in Oxford, Gowerstone had one of his technicians place a tracking device in the basket. If for some reason the two children escaped again, he would always know where they were, or at least where the balloon was.
âWeâve tracked them here, but thereâs no more movement,â said the officer, gesturing to the monitor.
âI see.â
âWhat are they doing at Windsor Castle?â
âI have no idea,â he replied irritably. âThe way this case is going, Iâve learned to expect anything.â Gowerstone thought for a moment as he looked at his watch. âIs the Queen in residence?â
âNo, sheâs at Buckingham Palace for two days.â
âGood. Weâve got a few loyal contacts at Windsor, correct?â
âYes, sir.â
âNotify them of our situation and have them secure the children until morning.â His voice deepened. âMake sure they take every precaution to treat Tom and Sarah kindly. Weâll be there first thing to pick them up.â
âWhy not tonight?â
âI donât want to make a scene, especially at Windsor. We must handle this situation delicately.â
âYes, sir.â
âAlso, contact the local police and have them positioned around the castle. If Tom and Sarah are there, theyâll be locked in for the night.â
âIâll take care of everything.â
âWhat have you found out about the man they left with?â
âHis name is Dr. Randolph Churchill Hainsworth the third,â replied the officer, as he read from a file. âHeâs been a professor at Trinity College for over thirty years, specializing in physics and mathematics.â
âThis doesnât make any sense,â said the detective as he rubbed his forehead. âHow does he know Tom and Sarah? Why is he helping them?â
âIâm not sure. Weâve searched Hainsworthâs rooms but found nothing linking him to the children or Weatherly. Just endless stacks of ungraded papers.
